Instructions for installing a printer on various operating systems.

Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, OS X, and Linux have built-in drivers for our HP Laserjet 4100/4000 printers. Most printers can also be used with generic PS or PCL drivers.

Printers to Use

  • lj3.nceas.ucsb.edu for the 2nd floor conference room
  • lj1.nceas.ucsb.edu (Room 327) for the 3rd floor conference room

Driver Downloads

Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, OS X, and most Linux distros have built in drivers for the HP printers. If you are running an older operating system you may need to download and install drivers before you can print.

Windows 7

HP Laserjet 4100

  1. Go to the Control Panel
  2. Click “View devices and printers”
  3. Click “add a printer”
  4. Click “Add a local printer”
  5. Click “Create a new port”
    1. Choose “Standard TCP/IP Port”
    2. Click “Next”
  6. Type in the hostname of the printer you wish to add
    1. make sure “query the printer and automatically select the driver to use” is checked
    2. Click “Next”
  7. Select “HP” from the Manufactures list
    1. Select “HP LaserJet 4100 Series PCL6” from the printers list
    2. Click “Next”
  8. Type the printer name
    1. Click “Next”
  9. Click “Finish”

Windows Vista

Use the Vista built in printer detect utility (where?). Dell and Konica are not seen with this utility.

Windows XP

HP Laserjet 4000/4100

Option 1 (recommended): Download the latest driver from here and extract them to a folder on your desktop or Option 2: Use Windows' built-in driver.

XP Printer install in Flash using the built-in driver

  1. Click Start → Printers and Faxes → File → Add Printer
  2. The Add Printer Wizard will start, click Next
  3. Select Local printer attached to this computer and uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer, click Next
  4. Select Create a new port, from the drop down menu choose: Standard TCP/IP Port, click Next twice
  5. Choose the printer you wish to print to from the list below and type in its name (printer names are also on the printers themselves, one example is LJ3), both the printer name and port name should be the same, click Next, click Finish
  6. Install printer software by following 6.1. OR 6.2. …
    1. Choose Have Disk and browse to the folder on your desktop containing the drivers you downloaded in Option 1, click Open, click OK, click Next
    2. From the list of printers that appears, choose HP from the left box, HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL and HP LaserJet 4100 Series PCL respectively from the right box, click Next
  7. If Windows asks about keeping the existing driver, choose to keep it
  8. Type a printer name and choose if you wish to make the new printer your default printer, click Next
  9. Choose Do not share this printer, click Next
  10. Print a test page if you wish, click Next,click Finish
  11. If you are using Windows' built-in driver change the Device Settings to enable duplex printing etc.

Dell Color Laser 3100CN

  1. Download the drivers from here and extract them to a folder on your desktop
  2. Click Start → Printers and Faxes → File → Add Printer
  3. The Add Printer Wizard will start, click Next
  4. Select Local printer attached to this computer and uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer, then click Next
  5. Select Create a new port:, from the drop down menu choose: Standard TCP/IP Port, click Next twice
  6. Enter “lj4” as the printer name and click Next
  7. Select “Standard: Generic Network Card” as the Device Type, click Next, click Finish
  8. From the list of printers that appears, click Have Disk…
  9. Browse to the folder on your desktop containing the drivers you downloaded in step 1
  10. Select Color Laser - Dell 3100cn PCL6 as the printer and click Next
  11. Type a printer name and choose if you wish to make the new printer your default printer, click Next
  12. Choose Do not share this printer and click Next
  13. Print a test page if you wish and click Next, click Finish
  14. From the open Printers and Faxes window, right-click on the new Dell 3100cn printer and click Properties
  15. Click the Option tab at the top right of the new windows, then click Get Information from Printer, Click OK and start printing

OS X 10.5

Xerox WorkCentre Pro 255

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Click on Print & Fax
  3. Click + under the Printers box
  4. Click on IP Printer
  5. From the Protocol: drop down menu, choose HP Jet Direct - Socket
  6. In the Address: field enter lj6.nceas.ucsb.edu
  7. From the Print Using: drop down menu choose Select a driver to use… then select Xerox WorkCentre Pro 255
  8. Click Add

OS X 10.4

HP Laserjet 4000/4100

OS X Printer install in Flash

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Click on Print & Fax
  3. Click + in the Printing menu
  4. Click on IP Printer
  5. From the Protocol: drop down menu, choose HP Jet Direct - Socket
  6. In the Address: field enter lj1.nceas.ucsb.edu if you are in the 3rd floor conference room or lj3.nceas.ucsb.edu if you are in the 2nd floor conference room, leave the Queue: name blank
  7. From the Print Using: drop down menu choose HP and as the model HP Laserjet 4100 MFP v… and HP Laserjet 4000 respectively , click Add
  8. Enable the following Installable Options, click Continue and start printing
    • Tray 3
    • Duplex Unit
    • Total Memory: 24-31 MB

Dell Color Laser 3100CN

  1. Download and run the Dell 3100cn Installer
  2. Open System Preferences
  3. Click on Print & Fax
  4. Click + in the Printing menu
  5. Click on IP Printer
  6. From the Protocol: drop down menu, choose HP Jet Direct - Socket
  7. In the Address: field enter lj4, leave the Queue: name blank
  8. OS X will automatically detect the correct printer type, click Add
  9. Enable the following Installable Options, click Continue and start printing
    • Memory Capacity: 320MB
    • Option Tray Module: 250 Sheet Tray Module (A4/Letter Cassette)
    • Duplex Module
