Instructions for installing a printer on various operating systems.
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, OS X, and Linux have built-in drivers for our HP Laserjet 4100/4000 printers. Most printers can also be used with generic PS or PCL drivers.
Printers to Use
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, OS X, and most Linux distros have built in drivers for the HP printers. If you are running an older operating system you may need to download and install drivers before you can print.
Go to the Control Panel
Click “View devices and printers”
Click “add a printer”
Click “Add a local printer”
Click “Create a new port”
Choose “Standard TCP/IP Port”
Click “Next”
Type in the hostname of the printer you wish to add
make sure “query the printer and automatically select the driver to use” is checked
Click “Next”
Select “HP” from the Manufactures list
Select “HP LaserJet 4100 Series PCL6” from the printers list
Click “Next”
Type the printer name
Click “Next”
Click “Finish”
Use the Vista built in printer detect utility (where?). Dell and Konica are not seen with this utility.
Option 1 (recommended): Download the latest driver from here and extract them to a folder on your desktop
or
Option 2: Use Windows' built-in driver.
XP Printer install in Flash using the built-in driver
Click Start → Printers and Faxes → File → Add Printer
The Add Printer Wizard will start, click Next
Select Local printer attached to this computer and uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer, click Next
Select Create a new port, from the drop down menu choose: Standard TCP/IP Port, click Next twice
Choose the printer you wish to print to from the list below and type in its name (printer names are also on the printers themselves, one example is LJ3), both the printer name and port name should be the same, click Next, click Finish
Install printer software by following 6.1. OR 6.2. …
Choose Have Disk and browse to the folder on your desktop containing the drivers you downloaded in Option 1, click Open, click OK, click Next
From the list of printers that appears, choose HP from the left box, HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL and HP LaserJet 4100 Series PCL respectively from the right box, click Next
If Windows asks about keeping the existing driver, choose to keep it
Type a printer name and choose if you wish to make the new printer your default printer, click Next
Choose Do not share this printer, click Next
Print a test page if you wish, click Next,click Finish
If you are using Windows' built-in driver change the
Device Settings to enable duplex printing etc.
Download the drivers from
here and extract them to a folder on your desktop
Click Start → Printers and Faxes → File → Add Printer
The Add Printer Wizard will start, click Next
Select Local printer attached to this computer and uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer, then click Next
Select Create a new port:, from the drop down menu choose: Standard TCP/IP Port, click Next twice
Enter “lj4” as the printer name and click Next
Select “Standard: Generic Network Card” as the Device Type, click Next, click Finish
From the list of printers that appears, click Have Disk…
Browse to the folder on your desktop containing the drivers you downloaded in step 1
Select Color Laser - Dell 3100cn PCL6 as the printer and click Next
Type a printer name and choose if you wish to make the new printer your default printer, click Next
Choose Do not share this printer and click Next
Print a test page if you wish and click Next, click Finish
From the open Printers and Faxes window, right-click on the new Dell 3100cn printer and click Properties
Click the Option tab at the top right of the new windows, then click Get Information from Printer, Click OK and start printing
Open System Preferences
Click on Print & Fax
Click + under the Printers box
Click on IP Printer
From the Protocol: drop down menu, choose HP Jet Direct - Socket
In the Address: field enter lj6.nceas.ucsb.edu
From the Print Using: drop down menu choose Select a driver to use… then select Xerox WorkCentre Pro 255
Click Add
OS X Printer install in Flash
Open System Preferences
Click on Print & Fax
Click + in the Printing menu
Click on IP Printer
From the Protocol: drop down menu, choose HP Jet Direct - Socket
In the Address: field enter lj1.nceas.ucsb.edu if you are in the 3rd floor conference room or lj3.nceas.ucsb.edu if you are in the 2nd floor conference room, leave the Queue: name blank
From the Print Using: drop down menu choose HP and as the model HP Laserjet 4100 MFP v… and HP Laserjet 4000 respectively , click Add
Enable the following Installable Options, click Continue and start printing

Open System Preferences
Click on Print & Fax
Click + in the Printing menu
Click on IP Printer
From the Protocol: drop down menu, choose HP Jet Direct - Socket
In the Address: field enter lj4, leave the Queue: name blank
OS X will automatically detect the correct printer type, click
Add
Enable the following Installable Options, click Continue and start printing
