Changes Made to Default Windows Settings
Affects all users
- add computer to dhcp server, config networking to use dhcp
- set clock to automatically sync with time.ucsb.edu
- match hostname to Windows "full computer name", change workgroup to 'NCEAS'
- install all windows/office/antivirus/antispyware updates
- setup auto updating for OS / Symantec AntiVirus / Windows Defender
- enable standard ping in firewall config
- set 7zip as default archive manager for gzip/bzip/rar (leave zip handled by WinXP)
- setup NCEAS Printers LJ1 or LJ9, LJ4, LJ6 (LJ10 for people in vicinity)
- set Firefox/Thunderbird as default browser/email clients
- turn off displaying PDF files within the browser (how?)
Affects current user only
Folder Options:
- turn off printer autosearch
- turn on file extensions
Explorer Changes:
- "pin to start menu" R, Matlab, SAS, (XChat for certain users)
- set desktop background nceas wallpaper
- show quick launch
- remove all quick launch icons except for "show desktop", Firefox, and Thunderbird
- don't show language bar (show language bar on laptops and lab computers)
Other Windows Settings:
- depending on office location set Xerox WorkCentre, LJ1, LJ9 or LJ10 as default printer
- adjust power management, turn off auto-sleep
Other Applications:
- Firefox
- Set home page to http://www.nceas.ucsb.edu
- Add NCEAS Knowledge Base to bookmarks toolbar
- Setup Thunderbird email using NCEAS Email Setup
- Setup xchat, have it start on login
