First Login: Setting Up Your NCEAS Account

For security reasons, we require that you change your temporary password upon your first login. This process must be completed by accessing the server via SSH.

💡 Tip: Pick your password early Before starting, choose a strong password. You can find the official UCSB password recommendations here.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open your Terminal: If you do not know how to SSH into a remote server, please refer to our Getting Started with SSH guide.
  2. Connect to the Server: Initiate the connection. When prompted, enter the temporary password you were sent.
    • Note: The cursor will not move or show characters while you are typing your password. This is a standard security feature.
  3. Initiate Password Change: You should be immediately prompted to change your expired password.
  4. Verify Current Password: Type in your current (temporary) password once more.
  5. Set New Password: Enter your new, strong password.
