Instructions for Installing Printer Drivers

General Information

Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux have built-in drivers for our HP Laserjet printers. Most printers can also be used with generic PS or PCL drivers.

Printers to Use

  • for general printing to the Vislab (331)
  • (Hallway next to room 326) for the Paseo Room
  • (Admin Office 309) for the administrative staff
  • Complete List, including driver downloads

Detailed Installation Instructions

Canon iR ADV C250iF (LJ3 & LJ9)


  1. Get the printer driver from the computing group or download the latest one from Canon–download the recommended one with the name beginning with “UFRII_”
  2. Double-click the .dmg file and follow the instructions
  3. System Preferences
    • ⇒ Printers & Scanners
    • ⇒ Add Printer or Scanner
    • ⇒ IP ⇒ Address
    • or
    • ⇒ Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
    • ⇒ Name: LJ3 - Canon Copier or LJ9 - Fax
    • ⇒ Use: Select Software…
    • ⇒ Canon iR-ADV C250/350 ⇒ OK ⇒ Add
  4. Set printing to default to black & white
    1. If CUPS webinterface is disabled, open the Terminal and run
       cupsctl WebInterface=yes 
      • ⇒ click LJ3_Canon_Copier or LJ9_Canon_Copier (or similar)
      • ⇒ Maintenance: Set Default Options
      • ⇒ General
      • ⇒ Color Mode: Black and White;
    2. Click “Set Default Options” button and enter your username and password (of your computer account)
    3. Disable the CUPS webinterface for security from the Terminal
      cupsctl WebInterface=no

HP Laserjet 4100

Windows 7

  1. Go to the Control Panel
  2. Click “View devices and printers”
  3. Click “add a printer”
  4. Click “Add a local printer”
  5. Click “Create a new port”
    1. Choose “Standard TCP/IP Port”
    2. Click “Next”
  6. Type in the hostname of the printer you wish to add
    1. make sure “query the printer and automatically select the driver to use” is checked
    2. Click “Next”
  7. Select “HP” from the Manufactures list
    1. Select “HP LaserJet 4100 Series PCL6” from the printers list
    2. Click “Next”
  8. Type the printer name
    1. Click “Next”
  9. Click “Finish”
